A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm had warned him that a bee in the scriptorium in February was a bad sign, but Thomas had never believed in omens, only in cold hands and the work of scraping vellum until his knuckles bled. The bumblebee bumped against the leaded window again, heavy and furious, its wings catching the thin light.

"It wants out," Anselm said, not lifting his eyes from the psalter where a gold initial was drying. "They never learn which way is out. They go for the brightest thing and then they break themselves on the glass."

Thomas set down his knife. The bee was bigger than it had any right to be, its striped abdomen dusted amber like the honey they kept in the undercroft. He crossed the flagstones, cupped his palms, and waited. It landed on his knuckle and walked the length of his finger, the veins of its wings drawn as fine as frost on a pane.

He carried it to the casement and eased the catch with his thumb. The cold came in first, then the smell of wet earth from the physic garden, where the first crocus had broken through the mulch that morning. Thomas held his hand out into the air and felt the bee gather itself, legs tightening on his skin, and then it was gone over the wall toward the hives, unhurried, as if it had always known the way.

When he turned back, Anselm had put down his brush. "Most men would have swatted it," the old monk said quietly. Then he went back to his gold leaf, and Thomas found he was smiling at a bee that was no longer there.
