Dear Ruth, the snow has shut the Dunmere road for four days and the ploughs have given up on us. You will want to know about the cellar. The Ashfield barrel is down to its last two inches, and Gideon Pask, stuck in the snug since Tuesday, has appointed himself keeper of it. He measures each pour against the brass rule he uses for his maps, and he says a barrel is a promise that ought to be kept by a steady hand.

Yesterday he took a biro from the bar and wrote something across the back of his palm, between thumb and finger, pressing so hard the nib spat. "Beer goes here," he announced, and held it up to the fire like a proclamation. The mill lad, who has been betting him half a crown that he would never keep a pint past noon, laughed until he choked on his crisps. Gideon only shrugged and said the words would outlast the snow, which is more than either of them can say for the pub's roof.

By Thursday the joke had grown legs. Every guest wanted a turn at the cellar door, and the rule became a ritual: a pour for whoever had got the thaw forecast wrong, a pour for the dog. The last inch went to the window at midnight, when the wind dropped and the stars came out over the frozen beck.

The ploughs came this morning. Gideon was first out to shake the driver's hand, and he kept his palm turned up so the biro letters caught the light. Ruth, I have no idea whether he meant it as a joke or a memorial, but the barrel is empty and the snow is going, and I expect you will tell me I should have stopped him.
