Quote tattoo in serif lettering on forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is three lines of text in a classic serif typeface reading Go then, there are other worlds than these, set across the inner forearm. The letters have crisp, even outlines with solid fill, and the ink appears as a single dark tone on the skin. The image is a close, straight-on shot with the text centred on a plain skin background.

The lift in Calder House had been dead since Tuesday, so Nell climbed the stairwell with a carrier bag of library books cutting into her fingers. On the eighth landing the door of flat 84 stood open a finger's width, and the shipping forecast leaked through the gap, Dogger and Fisher going quiet as if someone had turned the sea down.

Dennis Pryce was at the window in his good cardigan, which told her before he spoke that something was ending. Boxes stood taped along the hall. A telescope on three brass legs pointed across the car park at the flats opposite, where one kitchen light showed a woman stirring a pan. "They've found me a room in Margate," he said. "Sea view, apparently. I told them I'd had enough of looking at the sea from here."

He had a paperback open on the sill, its spine cracked white, and he read from the last page as though it were a weather report. "Go then, there are other worlds than these. That's all she says, and then she just goes through. Nobody ever asks what she left behind on this side." Nell said nothing. The buttons of his cardigan were done up one hole out.

He pressed the telescope into her arms, too heavy for a man his age to carry down twelve flights. "Take it. Point it at something you've never looked at." On the landing she bent to the eyepiece. The kitchen light across the car park had gone out, and above the ring road the sky was an enormous, unbothered blue, the kind that keeps going past anything you could reach.
