Believe script with teal ribbon on shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
A close-up photograph of a script tattoo reading Believe on the upper back near the shoulder blade. The lettering is thin black linework with soft shading, and a small teal awareness ribbon is woven into the word between the letters. The skin is lit by indoor light against a purple top, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

Dear Ruth, The ice let go of the Trent on Tuesday, a week after Dad swore it would, and we are moving again, slow as a funeral but moving. You'll want to know about the cabin side. Stan Ashby, the sign-writer from Gainsborough, came down with his tins and spent three days lettering BELIEVE across the planks under the window, black with a swirl on the B the way Mam liked it. He wanted teal in the middle, because the ribbon was for Gran, and he laid it between the letters so the word looked tied shut.

Dad took one look and said nothing for a whole lock. At Torksey he asked the keeper's boy to hold the tiller while he went below, and came back up with the old brass lamp that has the cracked glass. He said the barge had been named for a patient horse and not a fancy one, and that belief was never about the word on the side, it was about the rope. I thought he was being soft. Then the line snapped at Cromwell Lock and we swung broadside into the reeds, and he was the one who went over the side hauling, grinning like a fool, shouting the word at the water until the lock gates opened.
Ruth, the paint's nearly gone where the spray hits. I've not touched it. Stan says it'll outlast us both if we keep the boat out of the sun, and I think I'll leave the ribbon teal even when the black fades. Come up at Easter if the towpath's dry. Bring the good kettle, the one with no dent.
Love, Nell
