Ruth had been pulling the same ewe out of the drift since first light, and her fingers had gone past cold into a dull nothing. Her brother Tom stood at the gate with the lantern, stamping, saying the lamb was dead already and they should leave it for the crows. She didn't answer. She was working the wet fleece back from a small grey head, feeling for a heartbeat that might not be there.

The lamb came out at last in a rush of steam and blood, limp as a dropped glove. Tom swore and reached for it, but Ruth was already rubbing its ribs with a handful of straw, hard, the way their mother used to, until the chest gave a hiccup and then another. By the time the lantern guttered they had it wrapped in an old feed sack beside the range, and the ewe was bawling outside as if the whole farm had wronged her.

Afterwards, when the kitchen clock said four and the snow had stopped, Tom sat at the table with a pencil and the back of a feed invoice, drawing the infinity sign he'd seen chalked on the board at the Co-op, then trying to loop it into a heart. It came out lopsided. Ruth took the pencil and went over it in ink, the line running on and on without a break, and wrote LOVE in the middle in her tidy hand, the same hand she used for the ledger.

Tom looked at it a long time. "That's daft," he said, and then he folded the paper into his coat pocket, carefully, as though it were something he meant to keep.
