Love script heart with anchor on the back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line heart outline frames the word love written in flowing script, with the left side of the heart extending into a looping curve. A small black anchor hangs from the bottom point of the heart on a thin connecting line. The linework is thin and solid black with no shading or colour, and the design is centred on skin around the shoulder blade.

Maud had been bending copper wire for the bean frame since breakfast, and it would not hold its shape. Every loop she made sprang open again, the way Tom's boat had sprung its moorings in the February gale. Her hands were full of it. Out past the garden wall the harbour bell kept time with the swell.

She tried the heart first, because it was easiest to start from the point and go round. Then the word, which she wrote in one unbroken run the way Tom had signed every postcard he ever sent, the L looping back to meet the O. The wire wanted to tangle, so she let it. The curl that ran off the left side of the heart she left long, a rope she would have to answer for later.
Her neighbour Peg leaned over the fence with a trug of windfall apples and asked what she was making. "A thing to hang the sweet peas on," Maud said, which was true enough. Peg looked at the wire and said nothing, which was kinder than most people managed.
At dusk she hung the anchor from the lowest point of the heart, a small iron thing she had found in the shed among the mouse-chewed twine. She threaded the last length through its ring and pulled it tight. The frame held. It was crooked and it was hers, and the sweet peas were already leaning towards it, as if they had been waiting all summer for someone to be that foolish with wire.
