Biomechanical pistons and pipes on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm tattoo shows mechanical parts such as pistons, pipes, rods and a segmented chain, appearing to emerge through torn-open skin. The linework is soft and the shading is detailed, with strong highlights and deep shadows that give the metal a three-dimensional, realistic finish. The design is entirely black and grey and fills the length of the forearm against a dark background.

Dated 14th September. Mrs Pargeter has had the wallpaper stripped in the back bedroom because the damp came through like a rash, and what lay behind it was not brick. It was pipework. Brass-grey rods and a great iron piston sat in a housing as big as a wardrobe, all of it pushing up through a split in the plaster as if the house had been opened like a coat.

Mr Oakes, who has lodged on the top floor since Whitsun and considers himself the only sensible man on Marine Terrace, says the boiler was put in by a man from Hull who drowned before he could finish it. He says the chain that runs down into the cellar turns the mangle. I have not told him I heard it last night, clicking slowly, like someone counting coins in the dark. I have not told him the hot water this morning came up scalding and smelling of oil, or that Mrs Pargeter laughed and said the house was only stretching.

Thursday. I went down with a torch. The chain links were warm as a wrist. Where the seawater seeps under the back door, one of the pistons had worked free of its casing and was lifting and falling, lifting and falling, with a patience I found unbearable. I wrapped my scarf round the rod and held it until the stroke slowed. Tomorrow I shall ask Mrs Pargeter for plaster and a trowel. If she refuses, I shall take the rest of my board and go, though I suspect the house would miss me more than the rent.
