Mechanical core revealed through torn skin
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a cut-away mechanical core, with grey metal cylinders, ribbed components, bolts and pipework sitting inside a ragged opening in the skin. The shading is smooth and highly detailed, with strong highlights and shadows that give the machinery a three-dimensional look, while the torn skin edges add depth. Small green and red lights and a blue label with stamped characters add colour against the dominant greys, and the design sits against a plain black background.

Day 212 of the long haul out of Tucson, and the water tanker has finally given up on the cooling loop. I have been sitting in the cab with the bonnet propped and a torch between my teeth, listening to the old reactor tick as it cools. Mum always said I was born with a spanner in my hand, and maybe she was right, because the engine calls to me the way the sea calls sailors.

The mechanic at the last depot, a woman called Ines Varga with grease to her elbows and a laugh like gravel, told me the regulator on the third cylinder was seized. She said the spare would need to come from the scrapyard at Pale Mesa, where the wreck of a survey rig sits half-buried in the dust. I walked out there this morning with my kit bag and a jar of water. The rig's core was still intact, bolted together like a clockwork heart, its brass-grey ribs catching the sun. A blue plate on its flank read a serial I could not fully make out, but a green light was still blinking on the control housing, patient and stubborn, as if it had been waiting for someone to come back.
I unscrewed the regulator with my bare hands and carried it back across three kilometres of cracked road. When I fitted it, the green light flickered, then turned red, then steadied to green again. The engine coughed, caught, and the whole cab shuddered back into life. Ines will be pleased when she hears. I am not sure what to tell her about the light. I have decided to keep the old serial plate to myself, and tomorrow I will head east, back into the heat, with a machine that now carries a little of someone else's road inside it.
