Biomechanical sleeve with skulls and pistons
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A full arm sleeve of biomechanical tattoo work shows skulls, pistons and engine parts across the upper arm and forearm. The linework and shading are detailed, with high contrast, metallic highlights and smooth grey gradients on the mechanical components. The arm is photographed in a bathroom mirror, with a white vest top and a toilet visible in the background.

The engine has been dead on the bench since Boxing Day, and you have been talking to it for an hour. Frost has got into the yard again. Your father's old Fergie sits under a tarpaulin gone stiff as board, and out in the cowshed the radio plays carols to nobody. You wipe your hands on a rag that was once a shirt and look at the block: four pistons standing in their bores like men waiting for a bus that is not coming.

Mrs Pryce from the next holding comes down the lane at dusk with a flask and a question about the milk tanker. You tell her the tanker can wait. She looks past you at the oil drum by the door, the one with the skull your grandfather welded onto its lid in 1961 so the men would know when tea was ready, and says it has been grinning at her since she was a girl. You say he had a sense of humour about the things that could kill you, which is the only sort of humour a farm needs.
When she has gone you pull the spark plugs and find, folded inside the air filter housing, a strip of greased paper in his square capitals: THE HARD PART IS LISTENING. You do not know what it means. You fit the plugs back, pour in a drop of paraffin, and stop turning the key so hard. You sit on an upturned crate and just wait, the way you would wait for a calf.
On the third try she catches. The pistons rise and fall in the lean-to light, bright on their rods, and the sound goes out over the frozen fields towards the wood, steady as a pulse. Somewhere past the hedge a fox stops to listen. You let the engine run until the windows steam, and then you keep it running a while longer, because it is the first thing on this farm in weeks that has answered you.
