Robed figure and roses on upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo covers the upper arm, showing a robed figure with radiating rays behind it and clusters of roses at the lower section. The linework is fine and sketch-like, with soft grey shading across the rays and the flowers. The photo is a mirror selfie of a man in a red sleeveless top holding a phone, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

Pull your chair in close, love, the kettle's only just gone and I'm not telling this one to the draught. You see that pale corridor on the fourth floor of St Ansel's? Every night at ten to three the lift doors open by themselves and there's a smell of cut stems in the air.

Sister Agnes Dorrell ran nights on that ward the winter the coal boiler failed. Nobody else would sit with the men who were going, so she did. The east wing wiring kept dying, so she carried a hurricane lamp, and when its light came through the frosted glass it threw rays across the beds like a church window that had come loose from its frame. The porters called her the Lamplady. She never once let a patient go alone.
The turn came with Mr Hebden, a rail fitter with no family, who asked her for roses he'd never see in bloom. She had none. So she went down to the florist's bins behind the gates, came back with a bucket of stems the frost had nearly finished, and laid them at the foot of his bed. He died at ten to three. By morning every rose on the ward had gone to brown paper, and Agnes was gone too, her chair still warm.
Now listen. If you go up there at the wrong hour, you'll find the sluice room light on and a lamp burning on the sill with nobody beside it. Pick up one of the roses from the bucket. It won't wilt. Put it in the hand of whoever's going next, and sit down with them.
