Biomechanical spine tattoo on a calf

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A rear view of a calf covered in a black and grey biomechanical design of a vertebral column with ribs and organic, machine-like forms. The shading is strong and high in contrast, giving the bony structures a sculpted, three-dimensional look. The tattoo runs the full height of the leg against a plain wooden floor and a light-coloured background.

By the third week out of Valparaíso you know the ship the way a blind man knows a staircase. The bulkheads rise one after another along the passageway, ribbed and grey, and the frames arch overhead like the bones of something that once swam. Ferrante swears the yard at Gdańsk cast them from a pattern nobody would sign for. Ferrante says a great many things after the second bottle, so you nod and keep your palm on the cold steel as you pass.

Below the waterline the engine room is all pistons and breathing. The crankshaft turns in its bearings with a sound like a slow heart, and the brass gauges sit in their rows like eyes that have seen enough. You keep the night watch down there because nobody else will, and because the machinery makes sense in a way the sea never does. Every valve has a purpose. Every gasket is a promise kept. You log the readings in pencil and tell yourself that is all there is to it.

On the night the engine stops, the silence is so complete you can hear the water shouldering the hull. Then, from somewhere behind the frames, comes a knock. Slow. Even. You press your palm to the nearest rib and feel a warmth beneath the paint, the way a sleeping animal is warm. Above you the bell rings for the change of watch, and you count the strokes so you do not have to count the other thing.

By morning the engine has restarted on its own, and the plate you touched has a new seam running up its length, neat as a stitch, with a row of small ribs growing out of it like the teeth of a comb. The captain shrugs and blames the damp. Ferrante blames nothing. He just stands beside you at the rail, watching the wake fold itself back into the grey, and says nothing at all, which is worse.
