Biomechanical spine and flowers across a full back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A bare back covered by a large black and grey tattoo of a biomechanical spine, with ribcage-like segments and a laced, corset-style band down the centre. Ornate scrollwork and large flowers, possibly hibiscus or lilies, frame the shoulder blades and upper back. The shading is smooth and highly contrasted, with the lower back section fading into a mechanical pattern at the waistline.

The snow had buried the lane to the top of the gatepost by the third night, and the landlady at the Tallow Hill inn had given you the room above the kitchen because it was the only one with a fire that drew. Below, the pewter clattered. Somewhere under the floorboards the old bellows wheezed like a sick animal, and you lay awake listening for the rhythm of it.

Its owner, a travelling clockmaker called Mrs Ada Corrie, had arrived on the last cart before the road closed, carrying a long oilcloth bundle she would not let the boy lift. On the second night she unrolled it on the kitchen table by the lamp. Inside was a thing like a spine, a column of brass vertebrae threaded through with a cage of ribs, and a band of cord laced tight down its middle the way a corset is laced. Flowers of hammered tin climbed its shoulders, lilies gone soft at the edges from years of handling.
"It breathes when it's wound," she said, and you did not believe her until she turned the key at its base. The ribs lifted. The laces drew a fraction tighter. The lilies caught the lamplight and seemed to open, and the whole frame settled into a slow, patient rise and fall, as if someone very far off were drawing a breath and forgetting to let it out.
Outside the snow kept falling. Ada tied the cord off with a knot you could not have undone, then pushed the bundle across the table to you. "Carry it to the road when the thaw comes," she said. "It will want to see the valley." You lifted it. It was warm, heavier than it had any right to be, and for the rest of the night you felt its ribs move against your own.
