Tribal pattern on an upper arm

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo covers the upper arm and reaches toward the shoulder, built from bold tribal-style bands and swirling curves. The linework is heavy and the shading gives the design a raised, three-dimensional look, as if the pattern is carved into cracked stone. The arm fills most of the frame against a plain white top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fair came over the hill at Michaelmas with three caravans, a bear that would not dance, and a stone that nobody would sell. It rode on the back of the largest wagon, wrapped in sacking, and the showman's daughter Nell was told never to touch it.

Her uncle had dug it out of a quarry in the north, where the men said a river had once run backwards through the rock. When the sacking came off at night, the cracks in its face showed pale, and the bands cut into it curled like wind going round a post. Nell traced them with her thumb. The grooves were warm though the stone was cold, and the swirl at its heart seemed to turn a little slower each time she looked.

On the last night a tinker came asking for the stone. He wore a coat of grey leather and carried a knife with no handle, and he said the carving was a door and the cracks were where it had been opened too often. Nell's uncle laughed and poured him ale. Nell did not laugh. She carried the stone out to the stubble field, where the wind was up and the dry stalks hissed, and she followed the longest band from its outer edge inward, the way her thumb had gone a hundred times.

At the centre she found the swirl was not carved at all but worn, a hollow shaped by a hand that had held it for longer than the quarry had been open. She pressed her palm into it. The wind dropped. Behind her the tinker's boots went away across the stubble, and when she turned, the field was empty, the stone was only stone, and the grass where he had stood held a single grey feather.
