Bird and Believe on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a clenched fist showing the inner wrist, where a small black tattoo sits. A simple bird rests on the left end of a thin wavy line that runs into the word Believe written in cursive script. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the tattoo is small and centred low on the wrist against plain pale skin.

The swallow came down on the wire again this morning, right above the Penhallow pole, and sat there as though it had paid for the privilege. Mr Tregear wanted it shot. I told him a bird on the line does no harm to a message, only to the poor boy who has to climb up and clear it. He did not laugh, but he went back to his ledger.

You will think me foolish, Ruth, but I have begun to talk to it. Every dot and dash that goes out to Falmouth passes over its perch, and I like to think a little of the words travels with them. Last Thursday the line went dead for nine hours and I sat with my hand on the key, sending the same word into the silence every quarter hour, because it was the only word I had left. Believe. Nothing came back. I sent it anyway.
At Porthleven they finally answered with one short tap, then nothing more. It was not much. But at dusk the bird lifted off the wire, dropped low over the gorse, and came back before the lamps were lit, as if it had carried the reply itself and wished to be thanked for it.
I am writing this on the back of the duty roster because the good paper has gone damp. The line is mended. Tell Mother the bird is well and that I am sleeping better. If you come at Michaelmas, bring the good scissors, the ones with the brass rings.
