Fine line circle on the forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raised hand with a silver ring on the middle finger and a stacked ring on the index finger, with purple painted nails, shows the inside of the wrist. A single thin black outline forms a plain circle on the lower forearm, just above the wrist crease. The linework is even and crisp, with no shading or added colour, against a pale, plain background.

Sit down, sit down, and mind the cake, for this is a tale for a wedding, and weddings are only as honest as the rings. Long ago, in the market town of Cold Harbour, there lived a compass-maker called Ada Pennock, who made instruments for sailors and surveyors and never once drew a line she had not measured first.

One winter a stranger came into her shop with a strange request. He wanted a circle, plain and perfect, scratched into a brass plate no wider than a thumbnail. "What is it for?" she asked. "For my betrothed," he said, "so she will know that whatever I promise, I have measured it." Ada laughed, but she made it anyway, grinding the point so fine that the line was hardly a line at all, only a shadow that agreed with itself.
The stranger paid in silver and walked out into the snow. Ada kept the plate on her bench for a week, and each morning she found it turned a little, as though something on the far side of the wall were tugging at it. On the eighth day she understood that the circle had no beginning and so could not be broken, and she sent it after him by the carrier's cart.
Years later, at a wedding in that same town, a bride slid a ring of plain grey metal onto her husband's finger, and every old woman at the table nodded, because they knew the rim had been measured. Nobody could say how it had come to the family, and nobody argued, for the bride was smiling and the bread was warm. Mind the measure, my loves. Now pass the wine.
