Small dog outline on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand in a loose fist, showing a tiny outline of a dog in a crouching or stretching pose on the side of one finger. The linework is thin and single-weight in black ink, with no shading or fill. The plain pale pink brick background keeps the focus on the small design, and a dark tattoo edge is partly visible at the bottom left of the frame.

Sit yourselves down, the lot of you, and mind the wasps, they've been at the windfalls since Lammas. This is the tale of Jess Tollard's dog, Fettle, who was no bigger than a loaf and twice as stubborn. Jess kept the old Pearmain orchard above Coldharbour Lane, and every September the apples came down faster than the pickers could gather them, and the grass went sweet and brown underfoot.

Fettle had a habit nobody could cure. Whenever a fine red apple dropped, she would go down on her front legs, backside to the sky, chin on the turf, and wait. Jess said it was a bow. Her brother Amos said it was a dog being a fool. The old woman at the gate, who sold cider from a stone jug, said the dog was asking the tree's leave, and that the tree had never once refused her.
The autumn the surveyors came up the lane with their measuring wheels, Jess would not sell, and Amos swore she'd be out on the step by Michaelmas. On the last warm evening Fettle went down into her bow beneath the Pearmain, and an apple fell, and then another, and then the whole bough let go in one long sigh. Amos stood there with the wheel in his hand and his mouth open. In the morning the wheel was lying in the grass with its spokes full of leaves, and Fettle was asleep with her chin on the biggest apple of all.
