Bird and butterfly tattoos on thighs

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The left panel shows a colour tattoo of a bird with a green leafy crest, a yellow beak and red shading below it, set on the outer thigh. The right panel shows a butterfly with teal and orange wings above two lines of cursive script, one of which is only partly visible, on the thigh. Both images are shot from above against a brick path, with black boots visible at the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last waltz at the Pavilion ran past midnight, and Nell stood at the cloakroom hatch counting coats against brass tokens while the band packed their instruments in crates. Dougie, the trumpeter with the cracked lip, leaned on the counter and slid a ticket stub across the wood. On the back he had drawn a bird with a crest of green fern fronds and a yellow bill, its breast smudged red where he had run out of patience with the pencil.

"Mr Hollis says it's a tune for the dawn stroll," he said. "I can only whistle the first bar. You'll have to finish it yourself." Then he was gone, the bell over the door swinging behind him, and Nell was left holding a drawing of a bird that did not exist in any book she had read.

She shut the hatch at one and walked out the back way, along the brick path where the sea wind smelled of diesel and chips. A moth the colour of teal and rust settled on the iron rail beside her, opening and closing its wings as though it had somewhere to be. Written under the bird, in Dougie's looping hand, were two lines she had only half read: keep the light until the dawn, and something about the tide that had run off the edge of the card.

She sat on the step until the sky went grey over the pier. Then she took the stub, pinned it to the cloakroom board between the lost-property notices, and went home to sleep. Later that morning the sun came up over the rooftops, caught the green crest of the drawing through the hatch window, and for a moment the bird looked as though it had decided to stay.
