Matching winged unicorn tattoos on calves
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
Two near-identical tattoos of a winged unicorn in mid-leap, one on each lower leg, with the wings raised and the horn pointing forward. The outlines are thin, dark and even, with light shading in the wings and body. The image is black and grey, and the two designs are placed side by side for a matching pair.

Mr Ashdown kept the carousel under a tarpaulin behind the pier, and every September he let the two of us have the keys for a week before the fair packed up. On the last Tuesday we levered up a loose board under the platform and found a tin box wedged in the dust. Inside was a sheet of tracing paper folded into eight, pricked with pencil lines, and beneath it a second drawing of a unicorn rearing with its wings lifted and its horn pointed at the sky like a needle. Dora said it was the same horse twice, one for each side of the wheel. I said it was a plan for stealing the ride. We argued until the light went orange on the water.
We never stole anything. Mr Ashdown came down the boards with his pipe unlit and studied the drawings for a long time. He said his mother had drawn them for him when he was small and laid up in bed, and that she had wanted two of everything in case one got lost. Then he let us take the copies home.
Dora had hers done the week she turned twenty, and I booked mine for the same Saturday. When people ask why a pair of winged horses, I tell them the truth: somebody once made two of a thing so that neither of us would be left behind.
