Lotus mandala with watercolour splashes on forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A lotus flower drawn in black outline with mandala-style inner petals sits at the centre, with a row of dangling ornaments below it that include small stars, crescent moons and diamond shapes. Soft blue, purple and pink watercolour washes spread behind and around the design, with some splashes running down past the ornaments. The composition is centred on the forearm against a dark background.

Rhys kept the wind chime wrapped in a feed sack on the passenger seat, because every time the van dipped into a rut the tin stars knocked together under the cloth like someone counting change. The road out of Sallow Creek ran dead straight for forty miles. The only thing that changed was the sky, which had gone from brass to a bruised violet over the ridge ahead.

Mrs Abara had ordered it in the spring. Her late husband's shop on Vell Street was being sold, and she wanted the chime hung in the front window where the afternoon light could pass through the copper petals and throw small crescents across the floorboards. She had paid in cash and asked him to be there before dark, and he had promised, because she had sounded like a woman who had stopped expecting things to arrive.

The storm caught him at the dry lake. Rain came down in grey ropes and then all at once, drumming the roof so hard he couldn't hear the engine. He pulled onto the shoulder and waited, and when the wipers finally cleared the glass he saw that the lakebed had filled. Thin sheets of water lay across the cracked clay, catching the last of the sky, blue where the cloud was thin and rose-pink where the sun had torn through. Between the sheets the ground showed in pale rings, like petals opening from the centre out.

He lifted the sack and the chime rang, clear and sharp, though nothing in the cab was moving. He hung it from the rear-view mirror and drove on, slowly, with the tin moons swinging against the windscreen and the wet road ahead gleaming like something freshly painted.
