Bird and poppy forearm pair
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two matching forearms are shown side by side. The left arm carries a black outline of a bird's head with an eye, and the right arm carries a poppy-like flower in fine black linework. Both designs have loose watercolour washes in blue, yellow, orange, pink and purple, with splatters and vertical black script running alongside them.

Mags had painted the Fenwick Travelling Fair's sideshow banners for eleven summers, and the one she could never finish was the heron. In every town they pulled into, she sketched it again on the back of a feed sack: the hooked beak, the eye that looked past you at the road. Her brother Teddy called it a waste of paint. The ringmaster called it bad luck.

The night the fair reached Cold Harbour, the wind came off the stubble carrying poppy seed, and Mags found a bloom pushed up between the cobbles behind the tea wagon. She cut it with her paring knife and pressed the petals into a jam jar of water so they bled orange into the glass. By morning the water was the colour of a sunset, and she had an idea she could not shake: paint the heron in lines only, and let the colour spill out of the flower like weather.
She worked on the banner through the afternoon while the lads hammered the big top. Teddy came with two cups of stewed tea and stood reading the words she had written down the side in her narrow hand, the ones that ran the length of the canvas like rain. "Who's that for?" he asked. She did not look up. "Whoever comes back to the field," she said, and dabbed violet into the bottom of the wash.
When the fair pulled out at dawn, the banner was rolled on the back of the lorry, and nobody noticed that the heron's wing had lifted clear of the canvas where the poppy met it. Mags sat on the tailboard with her jar of water, watching the verges go pink and gold, and waited for the first field that would take her back.
