Bird in flight on the foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A stylised black bird with outstretched wings and a dot for an eye is shown in flight. The bold, unshaded lines are solid black with a tribal-like, simplified quality. The tattoo sits on the underside of a pale foot, with the skin lit softly against a plain background.

Dear Marguerite,

The big top came down in Wexford on Tuesday, and the last thing the canvas men did before they folded it was wrestle the old black crow flag off the centre pole. Dad would have wept. I didn't. I just stood in the mud holding the rope while Ottoline, the tightrope woman, sang something from her childhood in Lyon, badly, to keep the wind off.
We have eleven horses left and nobody to feed them but me. Mr Pelham sold the calliope in March to a man in Bristol who wanted it for a car showroom. The lions went to a sanctuary in Kent. Still, the bird keeps flying over the lorries, the one Dad painted on the side of the ticket wagon, wings thrown out and a dot for an eye, above the words The Last Flight of Pelham's.
Here is what I have decided. Tomorrow I will drive the wagon north with the flying rig still bolted to its floor. I will find a village with a field and a dead apple tree, and I will hang the trapeze from its lowest bough. Nobody will pay. That is the point. Come and watch me fall, if you like, and bring a decent flask.
Your loving brother, Jules
