The swifts came back to Harlow Keep on the third Tuesday of May, same as they had every year since the north wall came down, and Maud Farrant was up the stair before the village had its kettles on. She had a ledger on a string round her neck and a pencil behind one ear. Thirty-one nests, she wrote, most of them tucked under the lip of the old garderobe where the lime mortar still held.

Tobias Ree, the summer lad from the council, climbed up after her with a flask of tea he had no intention of sharing. He was supposed to be checking the railings. Instead he sat on a block of fallen ashlar and watched a swift peel off the wall, dip low over the dry moat, and loop back up in one long curl, as if someone had drawn it with a single stroke.

'That one's showing off,' he said. Maud didn't look up. 'That one's a yearling and it's lost its nerve. Watch.' The bird folded its wings, dropped, then flicked sideways in a hook that left its tail hanging in the air a moment too long. Tobias laughed, fished the stub of a pencil from his shirt pocket, and for the first time that summer drew something other than the cracked masonry he was paid to survey.

When the ledger was full he tore the page out and pinned it to the gatehouse door. Nobody took it down. By August the bird was a small curl of ink in the corner, head tucked, legs trailing, and Maud said it was the only honest survey the castle had ever received.
