Bird with geometric triangles on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A bird, likely a crow or similar songbird, is shown perched in profile with its beak open. One half of the body is filled solid black while the other half uses fine stippled dotwork shading, and thin black lines form a triangle and a tilted square that overlap the bird. The tattoo is in black ink only and sits centred on a pale, smooth limb against a dark background.

The crow came back this morning just as I pulled the chain off the stake at the Hallam boundary, and it settled on the brass cap of the theodolite as though it had paid for the seat. Mr Ferris swore at it, then at me for laughing, then at the wind that kept flipping the pages of the field book. I told him it was the same bird that sat on the fence at Wrenfield on Tuesday, and he said all crows look alike when you've been up since four with a level in your hand.

It was the feathers that caught my eye. One side had taken the night's rain and gone the colour of wet slate, while the other was pale with the lime dust off the Eastgate road, every fleck of it stippled on like frost. Ferris wanted to shoo it. I wanted to see where it would go. It hopped down, walked along the drawn line of our triangle as neatly as a clerk, and stopped at the corner where the old square of the orchard should close.
There, under a hawthorn root, was the marker stone we had been hunting for three weeks, its face hidden under moss. Ferris went very quiet and then very polite, which in him is worse than shouting. He redrew the boundary with the widow's side of the orchard whole again, and he signed the plan without a word of complaint.
I've left the heel of my loaf on the stake for the crow. Fair's fair, and it never once asked us for a receipt.
