The bird has been trapped under the roof of platform four since the last stopping train pulled out, and nobody else on the night shift will go up the ladder for it. You fetch the broom from the cleaners' cupboard, then think better of it and take the lost property box instead, the one with the damp cardigan and the lidless thermos. The station clock says twenty to midnight. Through the grimy glass the rain is doing what it does in October, settling everything into a fine grey dust.

It goes for the light the way it has been taught to, straight up and then across, wings flung wide over the ticket barrier. You have seen a hundred pigeons in this concourse and none of them move like this, as if the iron girders had been drawn around it. Each time it lands on a bench rail it shivers, and the little grey-brown body shakes out a shower of dust that catches the sodium lamps like grain spilled from a sack.

Ruth on the information desk used to say the station ghost was a sparrow that missed its connection in 1961 and never got off the platform. You never believed her. But when the bird finally drops into the open box and folds itself small, you feel the weight of it, a stillness that is not quite fear, and you think of the eleven-forty to Carlisle still standing somewhere out in the dark.

You carry the box down the stairs, past the shuttered buffet, and out under the portico where the wet air smells of diesel and cut grass. You tip it onto the cobbles. For a second nothing happens. Then the bird rises, wings wide against the sky, and it is gone over the car park before the last sodium lamp has finished humming.
