Raven perched on a branch on the thigh

Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A raven stands in profile on a thin branch, its head turned to the left and its beak open slightly. The linework is loose and sketchy, with dense hatching and angular, faceted patterns across the wing and neck feathers. The design is shown in black and grey ink on pale skin, with dark fabric at the edges of the frame.

The snow had closed the Cold Harbour road on the Tuesday, and by Thursday the only guest who had not paid was the bird on the woodshed roof. Mrs Tennant said he belonged to the inn the way the cracked bell did. I fed him scraps from the kitchen step, and he watched me with one eye and then the other, his beak open a finger's width as if he were about to correct me.

On the third night the travellers came in out of the white: a surveyor called Haskett with a brass theodolite in a leather case, and a young woman who gave her name as Ada Strand and would not take off her wet gloves. Haskett wanted the back room with the fire. Ada asked only where the raven had gone. Nobody had seen it leave. The shingles beneath its perch were bare in a neat ring, as if something had stood there all day keeping its feet warm.

Haskett laughed, drank his brandy, and was sure he had shut the shutter. At first light the theodolite case lay open on the stairs and empty. Three-toed prints crossed the lane to the gate and stopped there, as though the snow had simply lost interest. Ada came down to breakfast with her gloves still on and set a folded slip of paper beside my cup. It said only: The debt is paid in feathers. Keep the bird until I return.

I went out to the woodshed. The raven did not move when I came near, only turned his head to the left, slow as a page, and let me see the sharp grey stripe along his neck. When I looked back at the kitchen step there was one black feather lying on the bread board, and beside it a single line of fine pencil, drawn by a hand I did not know, of a bird on a thin branch.
