Birdcage and flying birds on forearms
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two forearms are shown side by side. One carries a flock of small black bird silhouettes rising from the lower arm, and the other has an ornate open birdcage with a bird leaving it, a key and scrollwork beneath. The birdcage is rendered with fine linework and dark shading, while the birds are solid black, all in black ink and grey tones.

The rain had been coming down on the Cattle Market since six, and by eleven the awnings sagged like wet sails. I sold birdcages from a trestle table under a blue tarp, mostly to men who wanted something to hang on a garden wall and women who wanted something to hang in a kitchen window with nothing in it. Mother started the stall in 1979 and never once let anyone buy the brass-topped cage with the key.

The girl came by just after the bells from St Mary's. She had no umbrella and no hurry, and she stopped at the brass cage as if someone had called her name. "Does it open?" she asked. I said it did and showed her. The little door swung on a pin, and the key hanging from the scrollwork was the one that fitted. She turned it over in her palm, cold metal in the grey light, and said she didn't want the cage. She wanted to know if we had ever sold one with a bird still inside.
I told her the truth, which was that Mother once sold one to a man who came back the next Saturday with it empty and asked for his money back. The bird had flown straight out through the open door on the first morning and never once come down to the bars again. He had bought a cage for a bird that was already gone. Mother gave him the refund and kept the key.
The girl laughed, short and surprised, and set the key down on the table beside the cage. Then she walked off into the rain toward the bus shelter, and behind her a flock of starlings lifted from the gutter, black against the grey, all of them rising at once. I locked the cage in the drawer that night, and I left the little door open.
