Parachute, cup and flower on a foot
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a patterned cup or jar with a scalloped band, a parachute above it carrying a small wrapped parcel, and a small bottle to the side. A pink flower with green leaves sits at the bottom, with a few small birds drawn in the space above. The bold black outlines are filled with flat teal, pink, green and tan colour, and the design sits centrally on the top of the foot against a dark background.

The gull has already taken the first bag by the time you reach the gallery, so you are left with the parcel that snagged in the parachute cords, swinging a few yards above the rocks like a bad joke. Tom from the supply boat promised the drop by four. It is past six now. The wind has swung north-west, the sea is the colour of wet slate, and you still have the lamp to trim before dark.

You fetch the gaff from the store and hook the cords. The silk is patched in teal and faded pink, somebody's old bedsheet perhaps, and tied to the parcel are a tin of loose tea wrapped in oilcloth, a small bottle of brown ink, and a note in a hand you do not know: For the man who keeps the light. Do not drink the ink. Under it, a pressed flower, gone papery at the edges. You laugh out loud, alone on the gallery, and the sound carries off over the water and sets a few small birds lifting from the ledge.
Kettle first, then the lamp. You pour tea into the enamel cup with the scalloped rim, the one with the blue lace pattern your mother chipped years ago, and it comes out darker than you expected. Beyond the reef another light answers yours, goes dark, then answers again. It is the Skerry keeper flashing to ask whether the drop landed. You blink back yes, twice, and stand the ink bottle on the sill where he can see it through the glass.
By the time the lamp turns, you have written on the back of the tin label: Tea received. Ink unopened. Send more of the flower. You tuck it under the cup, where the morning boat will find it.
