Black and grey dotwork mountain landscape with pine trees and rolling hills, enclosed in a fine line rectangle on the upper arm.

Mountain landscape in a frame on upper arm

Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A mountain peak rises above a row of pine trees and wavy hills, all built from stippled dots that shade the peak from dark to light. A thin black outline forms a rectangular frame around the scene, which sits on the outer upper arm. The image is black and grey, with a bare back and shoulder visible and the subject's face not shown.

Mr Hollis kept his dotting needles in a tin that once held peppermints, and he would not let me touch them until the autumn I turned fourteen. For a year I ruled borders and filled in the lettering on the county sheets, the tiny capitals of rivers and parishes, while he sat at the window with a magnifier screwed into one eye and stippled the high ground. Every dot was a decision. Crowd them and the rock went black as a coal scuttle; thin them out and the slope slid off into the sky.

He taught me to shade a peak from its shadow side upward, never the other way. "You don't draw a mountain," he said, tapping the copper with his needle. "You let the paper go grey by degrees and trust the eye to climb." I spent a whole week on a single ridge outside Keswick and he rubbed it out with his thumb twice before he let it stand.

The plate that went to the printers in March had a frame of hairline ruling around a small valley: a peak, a row of pines like bristles on a brush, and hills that rolled off towards the edge like a sea gone quiet. Hollis had gone blind in one eye by then, and it was my hand that did the last of the peak. Afterwards I found I had put one dot too many near the summit, a dark speck where no light should fall.

He held the proof up to the lamp for a long time. "Leave it," he said. "That's where the snow would be, if it had come."
