Birdcage and rose tattoos on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A woman lies on a floor with her legs raised against a plain pale wall, showing tattoos on her upper thigh. A birdcage sits inside a dark ornate frame with red detailing, and a red rose with teal leaves is placed nearby, with black scrollwork visible lower down. The bold outlines and mix of colour and black ink suit a colour tattoo style, and the image is lit with a warm, slightly faded tone.

Mr Okonedo's canary had been on Ward Nine longer than the night sister, and nobody on the day shift would say who had decided it could stay. I found the cage at the foot of his bed at two in the morning, its little brass door knocking each time the radiator clicked. He was asleep with one hand flat on the blanket, the way men sleep when they have been told to rest and are not sure they believe it.

The rose came from his granddaughter, who left it on the windowsill every Thursday in a jam jar, stems trimmed too short because she never learned to do it properly. Its leaves had gone the dull blue-green of old copper under the sodium light from the car park. I checked his drip, wrote the numbers down, and told myself I was not going to be sentimental before breakfast, which is the sort of promise you only make at two in the morning.
At half past three he woke and asked me, quite clearly, whether the bird was still alive. I said yes. He asked whether I would open the door. I said I could not, that the infection rules were older than both of us and a bird on a ward was the kind of thing that ended careers. He looked at me the way my father used to look at a bad sum and said, "Then leave it shut, and when it dies, bury it under the rose bush by the car park. I'll be out by then."
I did not open it. At five I came back from the sluice and found the little door standing ajar and the cage empty, the bird perched on the rim of the jam jar with its head tipped towards the rose. Mr Okonedo was asleep again, wearing the face of a man who planned to deny everything by lunchtime, and I did not tell the day sister a thing.
