Blue mandala tattoo on a thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A pale bare leg rests on a patchwork quilt, with a circular mandala tattoo on the outer thigh. The design uses dark blue ink for radiating petals, lattice and dot detail, with some pinkish fill at the centre. The soft, shallow-focus composition places the tattoo against cream lace and a pale fabric.

Your mother will tell you the wheel was always in the cloth, but I know better, because I was the one who unpicked it. Ada Thorne had sewn for the whole parish for forty years, and when the vicar's wife asked for a counterpane that would outlast the church roof, Ada went to her chest and found nothing but scraps. Indigo was the only colour that held, and the dye-vat at the mill had been shut since the spring flood.

So she walked to Fenny Lane with a sack of old blue work shirts over her shoulder, and she sat on Mrs Pask's step until the woman gave up her husband's Sunday jacket. Ada cut the lining into eight wedges, pricked each point with a darning needle, and began the pattern from the middle outward, a flower of rings with little dots set between the petals like seed in a head of barley. Every evening she stitched by the stove, and every evening the pattern grew a ring wider and the lattice tightened, until the wheel was as big as a cartwheel and the pink thread she had saved for the centre glowed like a coal.
The counterpane went up at Michaelmas, and nobody could say which thread was old and which was new. But when the widow Pask came to fetch her jacket back, she found the lining had been folded into the very middle, under the pink, where no one would ever see it, and she never asked for the jacket again.
Ada used to say a pattern is only a promise you keep with your hands. I think about that when I look at the blue, and I think she meant the promise was to the woman who gave her the cloth.
