Black and grey arm tattoos with forest print tee

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A man wearing a grey V-neck tee with a fading forest print and black hem stands with his arms visible. Tattoos cover both forearms and parts of the upper arms, including a realistic-style portrait of a woman on the left forearm, a bird on the left upper arm, a cross with a rosary and lines of script on the right forearm. The tattoos are shaded in black and grey with no colour ink, and the photo is a clear studio shot against a plain light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fiddler had played the same reel since the lamps were lit, and nobody at Kell Hollow had yet asked him to stop. Old Maud Trevis sat by the door with her rosary wound through her fingers, counting nothing, while the young men stamped their boots on the boards and the girls turned out in their Sunday ribbons.

A stranger came in when the snow was at the sills. He wore a grey coat the colour of the birches beyond the village, and a jackdaw sat on his shoulder as if it had paid for the seat. Nobody asked him to dance. He asked Maud's granddaughter, Ellen, and she said yes because the fiddler had struck up something slow and she was tired of being looked at.

They turned once, twice, and on the third turn Ellen saw the floor was full of pine needles and the wall had become a line of black trunks. The stranger smiled without teeth. Maud stood, crossed herself, and pressed her cross into the dancer's palm. The jackdaw screamed, the lamps guttered, and the fiddle fell silent in the middle of a bar.

When the dawn came grey, Ellen was sitting on the chapel step with a cold rosary in her fist and words scratched along her forearm in a hand she did not recognise: keep the door, keep the bread, keep walking home. Nobody in Kell Hollow danced after that without first looking at the trees.
