Small botanical tattoo on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman is photographed from behind wearing a charcoal grey fitted t-shirt with two circular black emblems on the back, and black trousers. A small tattoo of a flower bud on a thin stem sits on the lower part of her visible forearm. The tattoo is rendered in solid black line work with minimal shading, and the image is otherwise neutral in colour.

Dear Edwin, you will laugh, but the poppy by the infirmary wall has still not opened, and Brother Anselm has taken to standing over it at Vespers as if it owes him money. He says the stem is too thin to hold the head up. I told him a stem only needs to be thin if it means to bend. Three weeks of frost and it hangs there, green-black and tight as a fist.

I went out before the bell this morning with the watering can, meaning only to see whether the rain had reached the roots, and found the bud had split along one seam. Not open, not nearly, just a thin line of colour like the edge of a letter read by candlelight. I did not tell Anselm. I sat on the cold step and watched it for the length of two psalms, which I suspect is the longest I have ever kept still.

I am not sure what I am asking you. Only that when Mother Hilda writes to say the Lincoln roof is mended and you may come at Michaelmas, you might bring the good penknife. I have a notion the bud will need a little help, and I would rather be the one who found it than the one who was told. Write soon and tell me how the river is. Your brother, Tobias.
