On the third morning the sky over the lower field went the colour of wet slate, and she sat on an upturned crate with the tin of cadmium red open on her knee. The cold had got into the brush. She worked the red into the centre star slowly, counting the points out loud the way her father used to, eight, sixteen, thirty-two, until the numbers stopped meaning anything and became only a rhythm, like the rattle of the tractor across the ice.

Her nephew came down the lane with a thermos and a question about the word stencilled on the grain bin beside the door. DONT, it said in blocky grey capitals, the paint gone chalky. Nobody on the farm remembered who had written it. Ada said it was a warning. The boy said it looked more like a promise.

She laughed, and the laugh sent a plume into the air, and she realised the quilt was finished, every edge square, the red holding true. She tipped the last of the tea into the lid and handed it to him.
