Black and grey floral forearm sleeve
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm covered in a band of flowers, including large roses, a dahlia like bloom and smaller blossoms with leaves. The linework is fine and detailed, with stippled dotwork and soft grey shading creating depth in the petals. The flowers fill the length of the forearm, with a plain white surface beneath and dark fabric in the background.

The Duke's gardener wants the roses drawn before the frost, Marta, and he will not have them coloured. Black ink only, he says, the way the old engravers did it, every petal built from dots until the eye fills in the rest. I have been at the dots for nine days. My thumb has gone numb and my wrist clicks like a clock that cannot decide the hour.

The dahlia was the difficulty. It arrived from the southern terraces in a crate packed with wet sacking, one bloom only, already browning at the rim. Master Haskett set it on the slate beside the window and told me to draw it as if it would still be there tomorrow. So I did. I stippled the ruffled outer petals so close together that they became a grey weather, and left the heart almost white, the way light sits on a pond at dusk.
On the ninth evening the Duke came down to the workroom himself, which he has not done since the flood year. He studied the sheet for a long time without speaking. Then he asked whether the small blossoms tucked under the leaves were meant to be real. I told him they were ones I had invented, from no plant at all. He laughed, quietly, and said that was the only honest thing on the page.
Tomorrow the plate goes to the printers in the lower town. I have kept one proof for myself and folded it into the book of pressed things under my bed. When the lamp is low, the dots do what Haskett promised: the roses seem to breathe, and the dahlia keeps its place in the dark. Write soon, and tell Father I have not lost the fine nib.
