Peony and blossoms on an upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a large peony at the centre with layered, ruffled petals, flanked by several smaller five-petalled flowers and dark-edged leaves. The linework is bold and outlined, with stippled and hatched shading that gives the petals depth. The design is in black and grey and fills the frame across the arm, with the skin and a pale green surface visible around it.

The barge Marigold Ann had carried coal up the Trent for thirty years, and in all that time Old Tobias Reed had never once let a passenger aboard. So when the lock keeper's girl came running down the towpath in the rain, shouting that her mother was took bad in Gainsborough, he gave her the tiller and told her to keep the bow into the current. She was twelve and did not argue.

They reached the town by dark. The mother lived, but the doctor said she would need a fortnight of broth and quiet, and the girl's father was a boatman lost to the winter floods, so there was nowhere else for the child to go. Tobias took her back down the river with him. He did not ask her name until the second morning. She said it was Peony, after the flower her mother grew in a tin bath on the lock-side wall, and Tobias grunted as if that settled a debt.

At Keadby the wind turned hard from the east and the barge ground against the staithe. Peony went ashore with a rope and came back with a bundle of wild blossom she had cut from the hedge, five petals each, and she tied them along the gunwale. Tobias said it was foolishness. By morning the petals had dried stiff and grey, and the blossoms had gone dark at their edges, but the barge had held fast all night, and nobody could say the flowers had not done their part.

When the mother came to fetch her in spring, Tobias handed over a tin bath full of soil. Inside, a single peony shoot was pushing through, ruffled and tight as a fist. He said it had been there all along, under the coal dust, waiting for someone to notice.
