Black and grey floral sleeve on a forearm

Japanese · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo covers the forearm with a dense arrangement of flowers, a butterfly and cloud-like forms set against dark background shading. The linework is bold and the shading moves from solid black to soft greys, giving the peonies and petals depth. The design is shown in a close side view on a plain light background.

Sit down, sit down, and mind the cat, she's been at the cream again. You want to know about Ada Pell's peonies? Everyone in Hallam Cross knows the peonies. Nobody knows the rest of it, because the rest of it happened after the lamp was lit and the pub had shut its door.

Ada had a bolt of grey silk from her uncle's shipping crate, a dye pot that gave nothing but soot, and a husband who had come home from the Ardennes without his colour. She boiled oak galls and rusty nails for a month, and what came out was ash and smoke, dark enough to bruise. She painted peonies on that silk with a brush made from her own hair, cut the night before the wedding. Each bloom had a shadow like a held breath.

The clouds were the trouble. They kept lifting off the cloth and gathering in the corners of the room, grey on grey, so the lamp never quite reached them. Her husband, Tom, said it was the damp. Ada said it was the weather wanting a home. On the last night of the dye she pinned a pale butterfly at the centre, its wings drawn in the thinnest wash of what was left, and went to bed.

In the morning the silk was empty of butterfly. Tom swore he hadn't touched it. Ada only smiled and went out to the line, where something was lifting and settling over the wet sheets, black at the edges and pale as milk in the middle. And when you see a butterfly over the washing in Hallam Cross, you don't wave it off.
