Biomechanical sleeve with pressure gauge
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A full arm sleeve shows mechanical machinery, including pipes, a coiled spring, and a large pressure gauge with numbers from 100 to 500 and a red needle on the upper arm. The rendering uses fine shading and highlights to give the metal parts a three-dimensional, photographic look. Mostly grey and black ink is used, with small areas of red on the coil and needle against a dark background.

The boiler on Scarrow was older than the chapel, and the old men said it had never once been let go cold. Every morning Agnes Pell climbed the forty stone steps to the engine house with a tin of tallow and a rag, and every morning she polished the great brass gauge on the wall until the numbers stood out black against the dial. The needle rested on two hundred, which was the mark the island lived by. Below two hundred the boats stayed in harbour and the children were kept indoors. Above three hundred the fog came off the sea and sat on the roofs for a week.

Her brother Tom had gone to the mainland to learn engines and came back with ideas. He said the coil that drove the pipes was only a spring, and a spring could be wound tighter than any man had a right to wind it. He wanted the needle up at four hundred so the herring would come in thick, and he did not want to hear that the herring had managed well enough without him.
One night in November the house shook under them, and when Agnes reached the top of the steps the red needle was trembling past three hundred and still climbing. Tom stood at the wheel with his sleeves rolled to the elbow, his hand white on the spoke, and the coil beside him was drawn so tight it sang.
She did not shout. She took the rag from her pocket, wet it with tallow, and wiped the glass until he could see his own face in it, pale and older than he had looked at supper. He let go of the wheel. The needle sank back to two hundred and the coil loosened with a long sigh.
In the morning the herring came in on their own, a few at a time, and nobody on Scarrow spoke of the wheel again.
