Black and grey floral sleeve on an arm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A full floral sleeve shows large peony blooms, smaller carnation heads and tall spiked flowers on stems, with broad leaves filling the gaps. The linework is crisp and dark, with soft grey shading giving the petals depth and volume. The arm is shown in a casual outdoor setting, with the design wrapping from the upper arm down towards the wrist.

The steward's girl was sent up the hill for peonies, because the cook wanted them for a christening and the lower beds had been eaten by slugs. The castle above the river had been roofless for forty winters. Only a grey goat lived there now, and the walled garden inside the gatehouse had grown so thick that Marta had to cut her way through with a bill hook.

Inside, the peonies stood as high as her shoulder, heavy headed and dark as wet slate, with carnations pushing up between the paving and tall spiked flowers leaning over the dry well. Nobody had tended any of it since the last countess died, yet it had not stopped blooming. Marta knelt, took her knife to the biggest bloom, and heard a woman's voice behind her say, quite pleasantly, that the stem was not hers to take.

She turned round. There was only the bench and a tangle of leaves. 'I need it for a christening,' Marta said, because she did not know what else to say to a voice in an empty garden. 'Then take it,' the voice said, 'but come back every spring and cut only what you need, and leave the rest standing for the bees and the wall.' Marta promised, and she did, though she never saw the countess again.

Years later the cook's grandchildren were christened under those blooms. Each May a girl with a bill hook climbed the hill, cut three stems and left the rest, and the peonies spilled over the broken wall as if they had been waiting for her.
