Black and grey mandala and rose arm sleeve
Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A full arm sleeve of mandala medallions, layered rose blooms and leaves runs from the upper arm down to the wrist. The design combines fine linework with dense dotwork stippling to build dark shadows and soft grey tones across the flowers and ornamental panels. The arm is shown against a white painted brick wall, with the black vest and grey sleeve framing the left side of the image.

You reach the Haldane Pass the week the snow comes early, and the carter at the last inn tells you the road is shut to anyone who cannot read a rose from a rock. He means the waymarks. Cut into the boulders at every bend are circles of dots, hundreds of them, pricked by a patient hand. Each circle opens into petals, and each petal points towards the next bend.

The woman who keeps them lives in a stone hut above the cairn. She does not look up when you knock. She is working on a flat slab with a bone awl, stippling a medallion so fine that the shadow seems to rise out of the stone itself. "Every ring is a day," she says. "Every bloom is the way down." You ask what happens if the snow covers the marks. She hands you the awl without answering.
You work until your fingers ache, dotting the dark centre of a rose that is also a compass. By dusk you have learnt to tell your lines from the grain of the rock, and the wind has dropped in a way that makes you trust the work. She checks your circle with her thumb, grunts, and sends you down the path with a lantern.
At the first bend the lantern shows a rose cut fresh that morning, its petals turned exactly to the valley. You follow them down through the snow without once looking back at the hut, and at the bottom the inn lamp is still lit, the carter asleep on the bench, his boots set neatly by the door, as if the road had never closed at all.
