The mason's daughter had been told three times to leave the marble alone, and three times she came back before dawn with her father's chisel wrapped in her apron. Aristen carved the fountain for the governor's garden in the river town of Kallia, a broad basin with a rim of acanthus and vine, and the governor's steward had paid for roses at its heart. Teodora could not leave a rose unfinished, so each night she worked a little deeper into the petals, rubbing them with wet sand until the stone went the soft grey of river mud before rain.

She gave the leaves their curl and let the scrolls run up from the stems like smoke over the lip of the basin. Her father found the work each morning and said nothing, which in Aristen's house meant he was pleased. The steward did not say nothing. He came on the feast of Demeter with the governor's guests behind him, stopped at the basin, and told the girl the roses were too dark, that they looked like wounds, and that she should be grateful the fountain was going up at all.
Teodora answered that the stone had been cut to hold a shadow, and that a rose with no shadow in it was only a stain. The steward laughed and ordered the carving broken. Nobody moved. Then the drought that had dried the valley for two summers broke that afternoon, and the rain came down on Kallia all at once. Every other stone in the garden ran dry within the hour, but the roses kept the water in their folds, and the basin filled from the rose hearts outward. The guests stood under the eaves and watched the petals darken and shine.
The steward paid for the whole fountain in silver before the rain stopped, and he never again asked the girl to make anything prettier.
