The net came up the slipway at the turn of the tide with a grey flower caught in its mesh, pressed flat and cold as a coin. Nobody in Gorse Bay would say who had hauled it from the deep ground, though everyone looked at the Garrow boat, which had come in low and quiet that morning with its hold empty of anything but salt. Old Meg Tallow took the net from the men without a word and called for her needle before they had their boots off.

She worked by the lamp in the net loft, lifting each broken knot with the point of the needle and drawing it back into the curl her mother had taught her. Her mother had said mending must run like ivy up a wall, one scroll leaning into the next, so that a tear never went straight across and let the fish slip through. The flower she left whole. She pinned it to the beam above the bench, where the lamp threw its petals across the tarred planks, and she did not ask Tom Garrow what the sea had wanted in exchange for giving the net back.

Three nights later the water lay flat and silver, and the Garrow boat went out again with a new wrapping of rope along its gunwale, twisted into the same long scrolls. Meg stood on the harbour wall and watched it round the point. The flower stayed on the beam, dry and grey, and when the wind came through the loft door it lifted one petal, as if to check the stitches were holding.
