Black and grey flower wrap on an ankle
Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
The collage shows a black and grey tattoo of several open flowers, buds and leaves wrapped around the ankle and lower leg. The linework is solid and outlined, with dotted stippling used to shade the leaves and petals. The three views show the design from the side, from the front, and in a close crop centred on a flower.

Dear Ysolde,

The bramble has finally gone over the north wall, and Brother Anselm says it is a judgement on the lettuces. I have spent the morning on the stone bench drawing the mallow and the wild rose that grew up beside it, because Abbot Osric wants a new herbal bound before the frosts. He cares less for the drawings than for the Latin beneath them, which is a mercy, since my Latin is poor and my eye is better.
Yesterday the old infirmarian pressed a sprig into my hand and told me to stop fussing over the petals and look at how the buds were packed, folded tight like letters no one has yet opened. I thought it a foolish remark. Then I drew the cluster again, the open blooms spilling round the stem, the stippled leaves gone dark where the shade falls, and I saw she was right. The whole thing wants to wind itself round something and hold on.
I am sending you the second page with this letter, the one where I ringed the stem with blossoms so they would circle a plain round stone. Osric laughed at it and said the bees would have to be told. Keep it safe. If the rain comes, dry it on the sill and do not let Sister Maud use it to wrap the cheese.
Your loving brother, Tobias
