Pink peony and buds on upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large pink peony bloom with two smaller buds and grey-black leaves sits on the upper arm, shown in a close-up panel and a wider view. The petals are built from flat, layered shapes of red and pink with soft tonal shifts, and the leaves are rendered in solid grey and black with clean edges. The composition runs diagonally from the main flower down towards the elbow, with the buds reaching up the arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mary Coyle had kept the peony bed behind the byre for thirty years, and nobody on the farm could remember her planting it. Her son Tom thought it a foolish thing to dig up before the ground froze, but she wrapped the roots in sacking and carried them into the kitchen anyway, where they sat in a tin bath beside the range.

The winter was the hardest anyone had known. The ewes went down in the snow on the high pasture, and Tom walked the fields every morning with a lantern and came back with less than he had gone out with. Each night Mary sat by the bath and talked to the roots as if they were a guest who had not yet arrived.

On the solstice, when the last of the hay was gone, the buds came. They were tight and red as sealing wax, and then one by one they opened, pink at the heart and darker at the edge, their leaves grey as the sky over the ridge. Tom stood in the doorway with snow on his shoulders and could not speak.

Mary said the peony had always been the first to wake, if you kept it warm enough. She carried the largest bloom out to the lambing pen and set it on the straw, and by morning the ewes had stopped crying. Spring came late that year, but it came.
