Black and grey full sleeve with roses and heart
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The sleeve shows a diamond with a banner, several shaded roses, a flaming heart with a radiating sunburst, and ornamental scrollwork filling the gaps. The linework is bold and the shading is smooth and layered, giving the roses and heart depth. The image is shown from two angles side by side, and the tattoo is entirely in black and grey ink.

By the fourth night at the Hollin Bridge crossing, Inspector Ada Penrose had searched forty lorries and found nothing but tinned peaches and damp cardboard. The fifth was a flatbed under a tarpaulin, carrying a stack of gravestone blanks, and its driver laughed easily when she asked him to open the crates. Behind the stone sat one small brass box wrapped in red felt, no bigger than a fist, with a flaming heart on its lid and a fan of engraved rays spreading out behind it like the light off a church window.

The driver, Tomasz Vale, said his aunt had commissioned it from a jeweller in Sheffield decades ago, for a man who never came home from the sea. Every few years someone tried to take it to the shrine in the hills, and every few years it went missing again. He said it was only a box. Ada turned it over and found the words BLOSSOM and a small cut diamond set into the brass, then pressed her thumbnail under the hinge until it gave.
Inside there was no relic and no bones, only a bundle of pressed rose petals gone the colour of old tea, a plain gold ring, and a folded note in a looping hand. It said: keep the heart lit and the roses will find their way back. Ada read it twice, then read the signature, which was her own grandmother's name, written in a hand she had only ever seen on birthday cards.
She stamped the lorry through without another question. In the mirror, as it pulled away into the dark, the brass lid caught the lamp light and the rays flared once, bright as a struck match, before the tarpaulin closed over them.
