Pocket watch, key and rose on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic black and grey sleeve section on a forearm. A detailed pocket watch with Roman numerals and ornate engraved casing sits at the top, with a feather and a skeleton key hanging below it. A large rose and scrollwork fill the lower part of the forearm, with soft grey shading across the petals and background.

The keeper at Stara Vrata wound his pocket watch every dusk on the stone bridge, because the men on the far side would not raise their pole until he had called the hour. Nobody remembered who had made that rule. It was simply how the crossing worked, the way rivers had banks and bread had crusts.

One October a girl came up the road with a rose pressed in a tin and a key on a cord around her neck. She carried no papers, only a letter sealed in wax the colour of cherries, and she asked for the keeper by name. He was dead, the sentry told her. Two winters dead. She laughed at that and said he had owed her mother a lock.
The keeper's son had inherited the watch and nothing else. He took the key from the girl, opened the small brass box under his desk, and out came a second watch, identical to his, its hands stopped at ten past four. Between the two faces lay a grey feather. Neither of them could say which had kept true time all those years, or whether the difference had ever mattered to anyone but the bridge.
He opened the gate without calling the hour. The far pole rose on its own, and the girl crossed with her tin under one arm. That night the keeper set both watches on the windowsill, side by side, and let them tick against each other until the lamps guttered out.
