Black and grey realistic full sleeve tattoo on an upper arm and forearm, showing a shaded rose above a skull with smoky background shading.

Rose and skull full sleeve

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

Two side-by-side photographs show a full arm sleeve with a large realistic rose at the shoulder, a skull beneath it, and a darker shaded section running down the forearm. The linework is soft and the shading is smooth, with strong contrast and highlights on the petals and bone. The ink is black and grey, and the composition runs from the upper arm to the wrist, where a small script and scrollwork detail sits.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Edrik had kept the walled garden at Saint Oswin's for forty winters, and in all that time the rose on the south wall had never once been cut. Novices asked why. He told them the rose had been planted over the bones of the first prior, a man who had grown it from a cutting carried up from the Wye valley, and that roses grow best where something has been let rest.

Young Tobias came to the garden in the spring the bishop was expected. He was sixteen, quick with his hands, and he had been told the altar needed flowers. He took his knife to the wall without asking. The stem came away easily, pale green and wet, and as he pulled it down the soil gave a dry sigh and a little of the old lime fell away, showing a yellowed skull set in the mortar where the prior had been laid.

Brother Edrik found him sitting in the cloister with the bloom in his lap, its petals already browning at the edges. Tobias was crying, though he would not say so. The old man sat beside him, took the rose, and set it in a cup of water on the step. "It will open again by morning," he said. "Roses are slow to forgive, but they always do."

Next morning the bloom had opened wider than before, and the bishop said it was the finest he had seen that year. Tobias never cut anything in the garden again. Each winter he cleared the leaves from the skull's brow himself, and the rose grew thicker over it, so that by his old age you could not tell where the flower ended and the bone began.
