The snow came early to the Sorrow Pass that autumn, and Ifan Dray was two hours above the high huts when the goats stopped following him. Ahead on the scree sat a hawk, grey as the rock, its wings half lifted as if it had been waiting for someone foolish enough to climb that far.

His grandmother had told him the hawk belonged to the mountain, and that the mountain kept a ledger. Every man who took a ewe that wasn't his, or moved a boundary stone by night, was written down in the feathers. When the debt grew too heavy, the hawk would come down out of the cloud like a dropped stone, and the debtor was never seen in the valley again. Ifan had never believed it. He had shifted the stone at Cefn Du three summers ago, and nothing had come of it.

The hawk lifted, slow at first, then folded itself into a dive so sudden the air hissed over the scree. Ifan threw himself flat. Talons passed a hand's width above his hair and struck the snow where the lead goat had been standing. When the bird rose again it carried nothing but a tuft of white wool in one foot.

He walked down with the flock behind him, and at Cefn Du he found the stone set straight, its base packed with fresh earth. Someone had been there before him. Ifan knelt and tried to push it back, but his hands would not do the work. Above him the hawk turned once on the wind and went back into the cloud, a little heavier with the wool.
