Ornamental mandala back piece

Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large ornamental tattoo covers most of a bare back, centred on a diamond-shaped mandala with a dense central motif. The design is built from fine black linework and fills of intricate repeating patterns, with a feather-like form extending down the lower right side. The image is in black and grey, with the subject shown from behind against a pale wall and a soft, neutral background.

The snow had been falling on the Harrow Inn since Martinmas, and by the feast of Saint Lucy the drifts stood higher than the stable door. Mrs Ottoline Pell kept the kitchen fire banked and counted the flour twice a day, because the carriers had stopped coming over the pass and nobody could say when they would start again.

Her niece Agnes was the one who noticed the windows. Each morning the glass was furred with frost, and each morning the frost had made something new: a star with nine points, a fern unrolling from the corner, a round figure like a rose that had been folded in on itself and folded again. Agnes traced them with a warm finger until the pattern ran, then tried to copy them onto the back of the bread ledger with a bone stylus. She never got the centre right. The middle always came out crooked, as if the glass had wanted something she couldn't write.

On the ninth day a traveller knocked, a grey man carrying a lantern with no flame in it. He asked for a bed and paid in a single feather, long and dark, which he said was worth more than any coin in the valley. Ottoline laughed and refused it. Agnes took it up to the window that night, held it to the glass, and watched the frost grow outward from the quill as if it had been waiting for the shape.

By morning the thaw had come and the traveller was gone, though the inn's door was still barred from the inside. The window held a great diamond of frost, dense and intricate, with a centre like a closed eye. Ottoline wiped it away with her sleeve. Agnes kept the feather, and every winter after, she drew that diamond on the back of her hand before she let the fires go out.
