Dusk came off the Mersey like wet canvas, and Ada Fenn was still at her bench when the first ferry horn sounded. Three sailors had left a sheet of flash pinned to the wall, each design a little more faded than the last: a swallow with its wings folded like a cut letter, a dagger bound in red ribbon, a compass rose opened out into a mandala of petals.

The youngest of them, Teddy Marr, had come back from the Gulf with a rope burn on his left arm and a restlessness that wouldn't wash off. He wanted the bird on the inside of his forearm, wings swept up toward the elbow as if it had been caught mid-climb. Ada inked it over one long night, the black lines dense as tar on the Bombay Wharf sample card, and when she wiped the last of the blood away the feathers looked like they might still lift.

He paid her in coins and a bottle of rum he never opened. She pinned his sheet back on the wall with the bird still on it, and that spring a postcard came from Valparaíso with no name on the back. It showed a black bird over a harbour in pencil, and beneath it, in careful capitals, someone had written: THE SWALLOW KNOWS THE WAY HOME, WE ONLY NEED TO KEEP THE LIGHT ON.
