Traditional black and grey full sleeve
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A full arm sleeve covering the forearm and upper arm, showing a skull, an hourglass, a dagger, a woman's head and a ship in a traditional style. The linework is bold and dark, with solid black fills and grey shading that gives the figures depth. The composition wraps around the arm, with the forearm holding the larger ship scene and the upper arm holding the smaller motifs.

Sit closer, the lamp's warm, and mind the step, it has a tooth missing like my Uncle Tobias did. Right. The light on Scarrow Head has not gone dark in a hundred and ten years, and I'll tell you why, though the magistrate in Penhallow called it nonsense.

Ada Keel kept that lamp after her husband drowned off the Gannet Rocks. She polished the glass, wound the clockwork every four hours, and each night turned the hourglass on the mantel when the oil was measured. Sand for the watch, she said, because the sea keeps its own time and a keeper must keep another. Thirty-one winters she did it.
Then the schooner Marigold came round the headland in a black squall, her sails torn like old ribbon. A lad stood at her bow waving a dagger at the sky as if he could cut the weather in two, and beneath him the carved skull on the figurehead grinned at the rocks. Ada saw the ship was carrying the drowned home, and she lit the lamp twice that night, which no keeper should ever do. The Marigold found the channel.
Afterwards the lad climbed the tower stairs, soaked to the bone, to thank her and ask what she wanted. She pointed at the hourglass. One more hour, she said, and he gave it to her, and the sand ran, and the sea went quiet. Ask any fisherman in Penhallow and he'll show you the skull, still nailed up in the harbour inn, grinning at the tide.
